Starting off on the right foot!

This was one of the comments expressed about the Friendship Journeys introductory session for parents and staff at the Art Institute of Chicago on Tuesday, January 22. The workshop included an overview of last year's program. Tamara and Keith gave an inspiring presentation on the importance of play and art in strengthening children's identity and self-confidence. We learned about American artist Joseph Cornell and we visited the galleries with Interpretive Exhibitions Assistant Director Mary Erbach to see three wonderful examples of Cornell's work.

Below are some of the responses you offered in the evaluation:

What did you like most about today’s program?
  • How this program allows parents to get involved with our children through different activities.
  • How to appreciate art and most important, how to communicate with our children through something that is interesting to them.
  • Learning about an American artist. We are always taught about European artists.
  • It got me really excited about a project that looks at art in a 3D way and that won’t intimidate our kids. I loved learning more about Cornell.
  • Observing actual art.
  • I really like the direction "Friendship Journeys" is headed this year. I think we are starting off on the right foot. It was a great introduction.

What was most helpful about the tour?
  • It gave me ideas to begin a collection.
  • It modeled how we can tour with our children.
  • I liked comparing the slides with the layering 3D perspective of seeing actual pieces. Wish we had more time.
  • Seeing the actual boxes definitely helped to understand and perceive different symbols and materials.
Was the group work helpful? What was most successful about it?
  • Yes. Widen perspectives.
  • Yes, because you can experience others’ opinions and experiences.
  • Yes! The sharing of ideas with people from other centers was great!
How do you see this program enhancing your own?
  • Through participating we can motivate others to do the same.
  • We are already working with the BIG IDEA of identity, so this will be a wonderful addition.
  • It will add a wonderful art element to our program. Children will start to connect art with their life, reflect and become more creative.
  • Rich art experience and a great way to get kids and families excited about the art and resources available.
  • Exposure to the arts is a beneficial experience all around.
What are some suggestions for improving this training?
  • Do bilingual workshops. Many parents are very eager to participate but do not speak English.
  • Maybe doing a mini art session where we make our own boxes.
  • Bigger space.
  • I don’t drink coffee, so water or juice would be fine.
  • More time touring the museum.
  • Close ups of actual art to see more of the collage and symbolism aspect.
  • More time for brainstorming
Soon I will post your ideas for extending this program at your centers. Thanks to all for your thoughtful contributions.
